"When are you speaking to the band?" a message pops up. "My request was to ask if I can be their fourth member."

However, there remains a single issue: The author likewise wants to be Haim's newest recruit. And we're in plentiful company. Multiple famous fans have openly petitioned for the honor.

It's clear something is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey doing sets at small eateries with their parents. Now they're repeated Grammy nominees.

Similar to the best groups, they're a close gang. Their visuals repeatedly show them walking in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such boundless joy you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans told us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a guitar'," states Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That is the biggest honour. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate people to make music."

"So anyone are welcome to be the fourth Haim sister."

Award Nod

The trio have called into a break, where they're recovering after an major tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the first female band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I follow the lists every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the accolade isn't lost on the band.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge step," continues Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the female artists that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Humour

The album was born from a time of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that unique in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The themes follow departures and partings. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they want to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to consciously practice shutting out the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Music

That recent confidence required a different sonic direction – more unpolished and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Humor

The trio's honesty shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters shared some of their romantic horror stories.

Someone broke up with Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Path

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their place in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an global fan base.

But the sister act will consistently be their primary focus.

"We have been playing music since I was four," shares Alana. "There is no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
